Birmingham leaders call for Covid inquiry

Birmingham’s political leaders have signed a letter to the Prime Minister calling for a full independent public inquiry into the government’s handling of the Covid pandemic.

Councillors and MPs across Birmingham say they have spoken to many grieving families in the last year.

Many they say, want to know why the UK had the highest death rates in the world and whether these deaths were preventable.

In the letter, the Council leader and MPs tell the Prime Minister;

“We have a duty to these families to provide them with the answer to this question”

The letter was published after a poll conducted by The Guardian newspaper found that 47% of people support formal independent investigation while only 18% oppose one.

Government scientists and frontline health workers have also called for an inquiry to be held.

The letter has also been signed by:

Jess Phillips MP for Yardley, Birmingham
Jack Dromey MP for Erdington, Birmingham
Tahir Ali MP for Hall Green, Birmingham
Shabana Mahmood MP for Ladywood, Birmingham
Khalid Mahmood MP for Perry Barr, Birmingham
Steve McCabe MP for Selly Oak, Birmingham
Preet Gill MP for Edgbaston, Birmingham
