West Midlands Police Surprise ‘Superstar’ Volunteer

West Midlands Police delivered an early Christmas surprise to a Birmingham schoolboy.

Oliver Hall, 12 regularly volunteers at Druids Heath community centre, which provides support to local families and children.

Last Wednesday, Oliver was surprised with a new pair of trainers while he was lending a hand serving meals at the Christmas lunch for elderly local residents.

Oliver often gets his hands dirty during community clean-up days by collecting litter and scrubbing graffiti.

Oliver said: “I had no idea about the surprise. I try to get down to Bells Farm whenever I have some spare time to help out so I didn’t think anything about it… until my name was called out to go to the front. The trainers are brilliant. I wanted some for Christmas but didn’t know if I’d get them so it’s an amazing surprise. Thank you.”

Police used money from the Police & Crime Commissioner’s Active Citizen’s Fund which is funded by money seized from criminals.

West Midlands Police & Crime Commissioner David Jamieson, said: “Oliver is committed to helping his community. He is an Active Citizen who helps to make his community a safer and more pleasant place to be. From taking part in litter picks, to serving Christmas meals for the elderly, Oliver goes out of his way to support others.”

Druids Heath PCSO Nadeem Mahmood, said: “Oliver is the oldest of four children and hasn’t had it easy over the past few years. He helps out at home a lot but that doesn’t stop him helping others; he wants to improve the area and community.

“He’s been accessing the centre’s services since about the age of six or seven and now is often here several times a day helping out, tidying up, serving food and preparing for events.

“He’s a superstar, a real inspiration to other young people, and even at his young age the epitome of an ‘active citizen’ who wants to make a difference in his community.”
